We know how important it is to have clean, safe drinking water. We are certified with the New York State Department of Health (NYS DOH #371) to haul potable drinking water. We haul the City of Rome drinking water, so it is already chlorinated. It is clean and clear. The water is sampled by an independent laboratory each month to maintain the standard set forth by the Department of Health. We also under-go an annual inspection with the Oneida County Department of Health to ensure all procedures for safe bulk water hauling are satisfied. We can deliver potable water to dug or drilled wells.

We are also equipped to deliver water to swimming pools and hot tubs. Summer is on the horizon, which means it is time to make a splash! If your pool or hot tub has been sitting empty all season, we can help fill it up with fresh, clean water. Our trailers haul between 6000 to 8000 gallons of water per load. We also have a 2000-gallon capacity truck for smaller pools, or if you simply need your pooled topped-off. No more waiting for the slow trickle from your garden hose!

4 Tips for Locating Your Septic Tank

4 Tips for Locating Your Septic Tank

Although it may seem easy to keep track of something as large as a septic tank on your property, underground septic tank lids are often more difficult to locate than you think. In some instances, you may not know where the lids are located, especially if you are not the original owner of the property.

Knowing where your septic tank is located is important for regular maintenance, and for planning purposes, if you decide to plant new landscaping, have trees removed, install a pool or fence, or build an addition or deck onto your property. The tips below can help you locate your tank.

When the septic system is functioning properly, a residential septic tank should be pumped every three years for preventative maintenance purposes.

How to find your septic tank

           1. Use a septic tank map.

Occasionally, a previous owner will draw a sketch showing the tank’s location and post the sketch in the garage, shed, or somewhere in the house. There may be documents pertaining to the septic tank and its location in the information left from a previous owner, as well. Otherwise, you can try contacting your local Codes Office to see if there is any information on file, depending on when the septic system was installed at the property.

           2. Follow the pipes.

If the house has an unfinished basement and you can see where the plumbing leaves the home, usually the tank is about 10 feet off the house, straight out from where the pipes leave the home. This is a general rule of thumb, not a guarantee. You can also gauge the approximate depth of the tank based on how far below grade the pipes are leaving the home.

Please note: if you have a bathroom in the basement, this could mean that your tank is significantly deep, 5 feet or more. If this is the case, please let us know when calling to schedule your appointment, as we may need to use a machine to uncover the tank, rather than digging by hand.

           3. Inspect your yard.

If you notice a spot where the snow melts more quickly in the winter, or where the grass is lusher in the summer, this is a good indicator of your septic tank’s location. Septic tanks can be made of concrete, metal, fiberglass, or plastic. A concrete tank usually has metal handles on the covers. If you have a metal detector, it may help you locate the tank depending on what it is made of and the depth of the tank.

           4. Look for your septic tank lid.

If you notice a pipe sticking out of the ground, this is likely a vent pipe. Usually, a vent pipe is about 4 inches in diameter and is often made of white PVC. We cannot pump through a vent pipe, as the vent pipe does not go directly into the septic tank. However, the vent pipe is usually located 12 inches or so in front of the septic tank, so this could be helpful in finding the location of your tank. Most tanks have lids with handles that can be lifted off to gain access to the tank. In this case, you do not need to uncover the entire top of the tank, just enough dirt needs to be removed so that the lids can easily be pulled up and set back on without dirt obstructing them. We recommend that both lids are uncovered to do the most efficient job of pumping the tank; you need both ends of the tank uncovered if you have a chamber tank.

           Standard Portable Toilets

Our standard portable toilets are ready to use upon delivery. Each unit comes with toilet paper and a hand sanitizer dispenser. Each unit is good for about 300 uses. Depending on the size of your event, multiple units may be needed.

           Flushing Portable Toilets

For an enhanced experience, we offer flushing portable toilets. Each flushing unit has a self-sustained sink in the corner that we fill with water at the time of delivery. There is a handle to flush the unit after each use. The unit is stocked with toilet paper, fresh hand soap, and paper towels.

           Handicap Accessible Portable Toilets

Make your event as comfortable as possible with our handicap accessible units. The footprint of these units is approximately 5’ by 5’, large enough to accommodate a wheelchair. Like the standard units, they come stocked with toilet paper and a hand sanitizer dispenser.

           Freestanding Sinks

We also offer freestanding sink units. Each unit comes with four wash basins, one on each side, as well as fresh soap and paper towels. The sinks are self-sustained, so we fill them with water at the time of delivery. These units are great for large events, especially those with food service.

Failing Drainage: What You Need to Know

If you notice standing or pooling water in your yard, or symptoms of backing up (slow draining showers, toilets, sinks, etc.) even after recently having your tank pumped, your drainage may be failing. There is no quick fix when your drainage starts to fail. In New York State, you are required to have an engineer draw up plans for a new drainage system prior to the installation of the new drainage. Although we do not have an engineer on staff, we can review the engineer’s stamped plans once they are complete, and we can provide a proposal for the installation of the drainage system designed by the engineer. It may be necessary to have your tank pumped multiple times to prevent backing up into the house while plans are designed, and all logistics are coordinated for the installation of the new drainage.

What Happens When Your Septic System Fails?

When your septic system is working properly, the solids stay in your septic tank, while the liquids disperse through the leach field. When your drainage fails (the drainage field is saturated), there is no way for the liquid to be processed as it is meant to be, so the water takes its easiest path, which is back through the inlet line from the septic tank and into your home, which causes the backup of waste. You may notice liquid pooling over the tank and leach field area. The unexpected inconvenience of not being able to use the toilets, sinks, showers, and washing machine can occur.

What to Do When Your Drainage Fails?

When issues arise, we typically start by uncovering and pumping your septic tank. Once your tank is uncovered, there are two obvious signs to indicate failing drainage. First, if the level in the tank is above the inlet line (the line from the house to the tank), which we can see by staining on the tank wall. Second, if water is pouring back into the tank from the outlet line (the line between the tank and drainage) while the tank is pumped. This occurs because the leach field is saturated and cannot process any more water properly. There is no way to fix the drainage once it begins to fail. Pumping the tank gives some temporary relief to the system, but it is not a long-term solution. We receive many calls from customers who are backing up or have pooling water on the ground near their tank or drainage in the spring. With a combination of the melting snow and customary spring rain, conditions are wet, and a leach field can become saturated.

If you are concerned that your drainage may be failing, please contact our office, and we can go through the process of installing new drainage with you in more detail. We typically start by uncovering and pumping your septic tank. Then, based on our findings, we can discuss the next steps with you. If your drainage is in fact failing, an engineer will be needed to draw up plans for a new drainage system.

Preventative maintenance is always in season, so please call us for routine pumping of your septic tank before problems arise!

Why Commercial Septic Tank Maintenance is Important for Your Business

If your septic system doesn’t work properly, your customers and staff could become exposed to pathogens, and unbearable smells so keeping these components maintained is an essential part of running a commercial establishment. Unlike residential versions, commercial septic systems are more complex and operate on a grander scale due to commercial properties having larger septic systems, pipes, and drain fields. Also, different commercial properties have different system requirements—grease traps and stormwater run-off just to name a few.

To deal with the problems that commercial septic systems could pose, you will need the help of professional septic tank cleaners. Here is how Eggan can help you keep yours efficient and functional:

            Keep Your Septic Clean

Larger properties typically need bigger septic tanks. While they work without needing your help, it is important to keep your tanks on a preventative maintenance schedule to keep things running as they are designed to. Eggan will perform routine maintenance that is essential for keeping your commercial septic tanks in working order.

            Perform Diagnostics and Repairs

Given the amount of waste that is released from commercial establishments, professional cleaning needs to be performed periodically throughout the year. The more complex the system, the greater potential for issues to arise. Whether there is a build-up, leeching odors, or clogs, Eggan can diagnose the issue and repair the damage before it becomes a larger and more costly problem.

            Use the Right Equipment

Though it might be tempting to take your septic problems into your own hands, it is important to hire a professional septic company that can perform a holistic diagnosis and action plan. Eggan is trained and fully equipped to oversee commercial septic maintenance. If your property has a grease trap, for example, you will need to have it serviced regularly. Trying to do your own maintenance can create a potential health risk for you and your customers, so trust the experts to do the job properly and safely for you and your business.

            Save Time and Money

If you think you may have a problem with your septic tank, calling a septic professional is the best way to identify and fix it before it can worsen. Performing regular maintenance on your tank can save your business time and money in the long run. At Eggan, we are flexible and work with your schedule to clean and fix your septic tank without interfering with your business, and we help you make informed decisions about preventative maintenance for the life of your septic tank.

In the event of a spill or release from the tank, we will conduct an environmental spill clean-up to minimize damage to the environment. Individual states handle underground and above-ground storage tank regulations. In New York, the NY State Department of Environmental Conservation (NYS DEC) must be notified of any spill or release. Above ground tanks should be inspected on a bi-annual schedule to ensure the tank is not compromised. During inspections, primary items to check include any damages to the tank, condition of the secondary containment, and all transfer piping conditions. One should also check for drips or overspills and if the nearby vegetation shows any evidence of soil contamination. Should any problems be detected, measures should be taken to contain any leak, to initiate the environmental cleanup, and to replace the tank.

The requirements for installing and maintaining underground storage tanks are extensive, restrictive, and costly. Some of the requirements include corrosion protection for all fuel transfer lines, release detection alarms, training for owners and operators, and the development of an emergency response plan. The requirements for removing USTs include tracking the disposal of contaminated soil, decontamination, and disposal of the tank, developing closure documents, and proper removal of soil and fill material.

When deciding whether to use ASTs or USTs, you may consider the costs involved, the risks of contamination and leaks, fire and explosion, security threat from vandals or damage from the elements, and mobility concerns. Other factors include space limitations, aesthetic needs, and shelf life.

Preventative maintenance is key to keeping things running smoothly. Your septic system requires preventative maintenance to reduce the risk of costly breakdowns. At Eggan Septic, we proudly offer preventative maintenance solutions for septic systems in central New York.

Why You Should Have Your Septic Tank Maintained

Faulty septic tanks are hazardous to the environment and can create unsafe conditions that put people’s health at risk. Regular preventive maintenance ensures that your tank operates under safe conditions for both you and the environment. Rather than waiting for an unpleasant surprise, regular maintenance allows you to identify issues early, so they can be addressed before they cause any significant problems.

Septic tanks are composed of three distinct layers that work in harmony to process waste. These layers need to be appropriately balanced with the right amounts of anaerobic and aerobic bacteria to keep your system functioning. The effluent layer—the filtered wastewater that sits between the two solid layers—must be able to drain out to the leach field. Otherwise, too much liquid will build up in your tank, requiring you to have it pumped more often.

When You Should Have Your Septic Tank Pumped

Household septic systems should be pumped regularly—at least every three to five years, and more frequently for larger families. Keep an eye out for these warning signs that may indicate it is time to have your septic tank pumped:

Abnormally lush grass or pooling water above your leach field

Water draining unusually slowly in your home

A foul odor in or around your home

How to Keep Your System in Great Shape

In addition to regular maintenance, there are a few things homeowners can do to keep their septic systems functioning properly, including:

Reducing water usage. Install high-efficiency low-flow toilets and showerheads to minimize the amount of excess water in your tank.

Spacing out laundry loads. All that soap and water can quickly overload your tank. Rather than doing all your laundry on one day, spread it out throughout the week.

Properly dispose of waste. A septic system is not a trash can! Keep cooking grease, hygiene products, baby wipes, etc., out of your septic system to prevent issues.

           What is a Septic Tank?

A septic tank is a large, underground tank designed to hold your home’s wastewater and sewage. Tanks are typically made from concrete or fiberglass and are buried within 10–25 feet of your home. As waste flows into your septic tank, it settles into three layers:

The top layer, also known as “scum,” contains any floating material—including grease and toilet paper.

The bottom layer, called the “sludge” layer, contains any solid waste that sinks, including soil and food particles.

The middle layer, or “effluent,” is the liquid layer, made up of all the water that flows down your drain. In many septic systems, this layer is gradually emptied into a seepage pit or leach field where it is filtered through sand and soil.

Bacteria inside your tank feeds on the scum and sludge layers, breaking them down over time. As the tank fills up, it will need to be pumped. Holding tanks are not connected to a leach field or seepage pit, and therefore need to be pumped more often.

How to Keep Your Tank in Great Shape

Nothing will prevent your tank from needing to be pumped, but you can take steps to prevent clogs and increase your tank’s lifespan.

Only use toilet paper designed for septic systems.

Do not pour grease or fats down the drain.

Only flush waste and toilet paper; nothing else!

Avoid using additives, as they can harm the balance of your tank.

Have your septic tank pumped at least every three years.
