According to the Federal Environmental Protection Agency (EPA)
"Lead is recognized as one of the most significant environmental health threats to American children. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimates that almost 1,000,000 American children under the age of six have elevated blood lead levels. According to the American Association of Pediatrics, lead can damage the brain and nervous system, and even a low level of lead exposure can cause learning disabilities, hearing loss, speech, language and behavioral problems, and other serious health effects."
Children under six years of age are often exposed to lead poisoning when they eat or touch their mouths without first washing their hands. Recent scientific research indicates that even very small quantities of lead can seriously impair brain development in young children. Lead is most dangerous to children under the age of six.
Lead Risk Assessment:
Should be done in any home occupied by young children;
Should be done in commercial and public buildings where lead hazardscould exist;
Helps protect children from lead poisoning;
You may be required by law to have your home or building inspected for lead.
Failure to comply with increasingly complex lead regulations can result in regulatory action, especially if there is a potential for tenants to be exposed to lead hazards.
